July 2011

Effective July 1, 2011 the State of Florida passed a law prohibiting physicians from dispensing schedule II and III controlled medications. This law was introduced because of the widespread pain medication abuse that is prevalent in Florida. This Florida law was intended to be for schedule II and III Narcotic medications only. Unfortunately, the law did not specify “schedule II and III narcotic”, so schedule III non-narcotic medications were also included in this law. Phendimetrazine is a schedule III non-narcotic medication and cannot be dispensed by physicians after July 1, 2011. We are hopeful that this law will be amended in the near future and physicians will be able to dispense Phendimetrazine again. We will keep our Florida physicians informed as we receive more information.

On January 31, 2011 the FDA declined to approve the new weight loss medication, Contrave. The FDA wants the company to conduct an additional study to address potential heart safety concerns. The Food and Drug Administration’s request for an additional study suggests the agency may yet approve the drug, but make the path more difficult.

We now have the new KVK brand Diethylpropion 25mg white tablets in stock. This tablet is almost identical in size, shape and color to the Watson brand.

Lannett Company will be manufacturing Phentermine 30mg blue/clear (beaded)
